Substantial is kicking off 2016 with their second Seattle Dribbble Meetup! Join them January 14th at 6pm at the Substantial HQ on Capitol Hill. Senior Designer Paul Norris created the meetup shot inspired by a local iconic Seattle landmark—the Freemont Troll. They’ll have a batch of custom troll-tastic swag and tasty refreshments. Make sure to RSVP!

We talked to Paul about the Seattle design scene in advance of the meetup. Take a tour!

What you love about Seattle?

I recently moved here from Austin, Texas, so Seattle has been a unique experience for me. The community here is hard working, and there’s been a wealth of knowledge for me to absorb from friends and peers—they keep me on my toes! The climate is nothing I have experienced before; getting out to the Cascades for a weekend trip whenever possible is always a relaxing and refreshing experience.

The city is definitely growing up (literally) and you can see the results of the massive tech companies moving in and creating competitive environments for the creative fields here. Seattle has been incredibly welcoming to me though, and can’t get enough of all the things to eat, drink, and explore here.

Tell us where you work.

Substantial is located on Pine and Broadway right in the heart of the Capitol Hill. It’s far from the cheapest place in Seattle to have an office, but our location is really important to us and a significant part of our identity. We love Capitol Hill because it’s not only the arts and music center of the city, but because it accepts people of all cultures and persuasions. Plus we’re lucky to have some of the best coffee and food in the entire city right on our doorstep!

What is the Seattle design scene like?

I’ve found Seattle’s design culture to be pretty high tempo and continuously motivated to produce high quality work with the level of competition that’s out here. You see a lot of variety of design here with the wealth of businesses we have from software companies, to brand experts, to the surprising amount of architectural firms here. There’s also always something going on in the tech meet-up scene, enough to keep you busy all week, every week.

Choose three shots from Seattle Dribbblers you admire, and tell us what you like about each one.

The Go! Team by Jason Custer, above left.

Big Go Team fan, big Jason Custer fan. His art always makes me smile, and those nose designs always crack me up.

Team Page by Janet Lurssen for Microsoft Power BI, above center.

The work that Microsoft Power BI team is producing is always top tier stuff, and Janet’s Dribbble posts continue to validate that. Substantial enjoyed meeting all the rad BI designers at our last meetup, hope to run into them again soon!

Dots 2.0 - Tutorial by Mark Pearson, above right.

I love process shots, and Mark always has great insight into his tutorials for his (inspiring) C4D work. Shout-out to his 6 hour Super Meat Boy celebration, progress in that game is no easy feat.

Can’t make it on Thursday, January 14? Find Paul on Dribbble and on Twitter. Big thanks to Substantial for hosting!

Enjoy reading about the Seattle design scene? Check out Winston-Salem and Tokyo and Berlin from the folks at Goodpatch, then go meet designers from your own great city at the next meetup.
