In advance of the meetup, we spoke with organizer Luis Ricardo La Torre about the Miami design scene.

Tell us what you love about Miami.

Miami in so many way is the capital of Latin America. It’s one of the few places in America where Latin people are the majority of the population, and you can see the reflection on the art and design everywhere. Miamians live for the sun and the beach, we love to have fun and love to sketch in the sand.

Tell us where you work, in relation to the rest of Miami.

I work part time for Jop. The Jop app connects its users with great service providers who bring help wherever they’re needed. Jop is located in South Beach in WeWork Lincoln Road the heart of Art Deco. I also freelance for a lot of amazing local clients. South Beach is a party neighborhood, so distractions are everywhere. You must have a very strong mindset to work here or else you will end up at LIV nightclub instead of on you Mac doing cool stuff for Dribbble.

Tell us about the Miami design scene.

The Miami design scene is very diverse in a cultural level, but also in the subject level. When I say I’m a designer in Miami, older folks think I’m either a fashion designer or an interior designer. Things are changing, however, with help of the Knight Foundation, the community of entrepreneurs, app designers and app developer are making a new path for kids to take advantages of the opportunities the Internet has for everyone.

Choose three shots from Miami Dribbblers you admire, and tell us what you like about each one.

Making the Impossible Pawsible by Chewy, above left.

Chewy is an amazing pet company that hires some of the best designers. If they weren’t so far I would probably be working with them. James St Louis, one of the designers that works there made the amazing pawsible.

When it comes to style, MazProject knows how to show how fun Miami really is, combining photography and her hand typography.

More Fun by fabio perez, above right.

Fabio Perez, also known as twenty21one creative, is one of the rockstars of MiamiDribbble. He is very involved and his work is amazing. He is always focusing on cool phrases to cheer everyone during the Monday blues.
