Timeouts are lightning-quick interviews. Five questions to help you get to know the players holding court at Dribbble. Many thanks to Paul for being today’s interviewee.

Who are you? Let us know where you hail from and what you do.

Paul ShipperMy name is Paul Shipper, I am a freelance Illustrator born in the UK, living in New Zealand.

What are you working on?

Just finished a film poster for actor Simon Pegg to give as a Christmas gift to Edgar Wright, Nick Frost and Nira Park. Also recently finished a film poster with Gravillis Inc for Journey to the West, opening at select theaters in March; a couple of comic book covers and a children’s book. Some cool stuff on its way and in the pipeline. Feeling very fortunate indeed!

Choose a favorite shot of yours. Why is it a favorite?

The Gift of Gandalf

My own favorite shot … wow … hmmm … it’s probably The Gift of Gandalf, mainly because it was a Christmas gift to everyone as a thank you for their amazing support.

Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?

In my studio I have half dedicated to traditional work and half to digital. The traditional setup is a couple of old easels, airbrush, paints, inks, pencil crayons … and working digitally I use a boosted-up iMac, Wacom Tablet. Software: Photoshop and SketchBook Pro are the two heavyweights I use mostly. I also use my iPad to work up ideas and comps for projects from time to time — some of which have been known to be used as final art! Shocking I know!

Choose a favorite shot from another Player. Why do you dig it?

Wow. So many! One that springs to mind that I really love is the one Garrett Gee posted with the wall quote*.

Find Paul at Dribbble, on Twitter, and at Paul Shipper Studio.

*Please note: The quote in Garrett Gee’s shot is from Jack Kerouac; Apple used the quote in its Think Different campaign.
