iOS Icons (Version 2)

Almost a year ago, I took a day or two to redraw the iOS icons.

Since then, Apple's introduced iOS 7, with a visual style that is fascinating and new. The talented people at Apple have worked really hard to create something pretty cool for us.

Today, I revisited that original task and took about a day to understand the new style. Simpler, smoother, subtler. While I don't employ the grid they created (and while I instead use the colors I chose), these feel interesting and balanced. Vibrant and bold, but not overbearing.

These aren't necessarily a suggestion and certainly aren't a demand. I leave it in the very capable (collective) hands of those talented people at Apple to figure out what's best. But being who I am, an icon designer, I took it upon myself to do something on my own.

Apple would do well to take your advice. These are very much in the spirit of iOS 7—but without all of the little things that make me cringe about the actual icons.

Very good attitude Louie. One question: why did you choose to invert the gradient background / white icon model for the iMessage icon? If there's even a reason of course...

I really like the suggested messages icon. If you look at the Messages UI, you'll see there are blue chat bubbles on white background, and the icon itself resembles that really nicely.

A lot of responses are coming to near enough the same conclusion in terms of colour, style and detail. Let's just hope whoever is in charge of Apple's iOS design knows how to take criticism. The last thing we need now is arrogance.

@Louie Mantia Probably my favourite of all these iOS 7 icon redesigns so far.

My reason is that you've done what nobody else (not even Apple) has been able to do and it's actually incredibly simple - keep the same (or very similar) icons and shapes that we've all become accustomed to in iOS 6 but just give them a much flatter design. Not totally flat though ;)

I personally feel that, although I don't completely hate them, the new iOS 7 icons are just a little too far from the previous iOS 6 versions for me. An example would be looking at the Safari, iTunes and Mail icons - really ill-fitting in comparison with such dodgy spacing. Whereas these sort the spacing and color issues, and are so much tighter as a set.

My 2 cents anyway and by the way @Louie I'd love to see the whole set.

Well these are more ok, but still not good IMO.

If you have per say 20 icons on your home screen, all you will see is very many pictograms with backgrounds in many different colors. Although this may look beautiful/harmonic, I dont think it will be a good user experience.

For me it is important to be able to directly see what is what and differentiate between the apps, instantly being able to find the app I would like to use, not having to go through everything for a 2-8 seconds finding what I want.

To be able to do the above stated, each icon would have to be more unique.

Dont get me wrong, I like your icons and know it's just a concept, im just sayin' :)

The thing I like most here is the detail. Either my eyes deceive me or the subtleties on the icon elements are fucking gorgeous.

Great proposition. Seriously I really think Apple give us iOS 7 with this type of icons from the start.

Digging this style, I'd love to see a theme using this icons.
But you left out the most difficult and criticized ones. :P

As always, good job. I think you did great capturing the new style while cleaning them up. They definitely look designed by one person, which I think is the biggest weakness of the current icons, they each look designed by a different person, but with all the same guidelines.

Your designs remind me of the WWDC App icon, simpler & cleaner, but without losing character.

I think the iOS7 icons we've seen remind me most of South Park Season 1, and I hope by release they find ways to remain "flat" but increase the quality and cement the style, like later South Park seasons.
