Summer kicked off with speakers and socializing for the more than 3,000 designers who attended Dribbble Meetups world-wide in June—with 15 events spanning 11 countries. Our amazing hosts talk about the meetups in their own words below, check it out.
Los Angeles, CA @ Ueno.
“On June 5th, we hosted our first Dribbble meetup, a gathering of sorts with other designers. We wrangled up a couple of our super dope designers from the SF office, Jenny Johannesson & Robbin Cenijn. We ordered some pizza, picked up some cheese, and made sure the beer (and La Croix) was flowing.
It was great to to meet some new faces, and catch up with designers we’ve pushed pixels with along the way. The music was great, the vibes were pumpin, we even created our own Snapchat filter. And did we mention we had a ton of pizza?”
Kyiv, Ukraine @ UBKbeach
“We hosted 1000+ guests, and it was the biggest Meetup in Ukraine. We had a lot of activities: skimboarding, volleyball, frisbee, sumo, water pistols, table tennis, balance sheets, and a big party. At the Meetup were 4 speakers: Anton Abo, Sergii Valiukh, Vet Orso, Max Shirko. And 19 partners.
This year we chose an unusual format for the Meetup – a huge beach party. It was really great for designers to get acquainted, relax, communicate, and listen to interesting performances by speakers while relaxing on the beach!”
Lagos, Nigeria @ Hotels.ng
“We had several discussion topics including: freelancing and designer interaction with clients, design to development workflow, and how to make the most of your Dribbble portfolio. Our speakers included Joshua Oluwagbemiga, Imogie Mubarak, and Amodu Temitope.
Being the first Dribbble Meetup in Lagos, this was a great opportunity to meet the faces behind the profiles and talk about design and the community.”
Orlando, Florida @ Full Sail University
“20+ creatives came together early on Saturday to take on the OrlandoiX T-shirt Design Challenge. This is the second year OrlandoiX and the Dribbble Orlando Meetup partner to bring the most creative design to life at their VR, AR, Video Games, and Digital Entertainment conference coming this August 17-20th.
Top designs are now up for public voting for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes! 1st place will be printed and showcased during the conference.
Stay in touch with our community by following us on Twitter, participating in our yearly survey, and joining our #dribbble channel on Slack at orlandodesigners.info. Also, we now have our own Facebook Group!”
San Francisco, California @ CrunchyRoll HQ
“We had a really positive turnout and a lot of great conversation. We did a few presentations around designing for living room devices with Israel Sundseth, building big brands with Arlan Smith, and managing international design teams with Ryan Ford (that’s me). We had a number of wonderful questions from the audience, and the resulting discussions were really insightful and enjoyable. Hoping to do it again soon!”
Miami, Florida @ BUILDING.co
“People usually ask me why I volunteer to do these events if it takes so much of my time. But I think that the level of reward that one gets from meeting people with similar interest goes way beyond any monetary value. The folks that I have met on these meet-ups and social work events have become my close friends and design trustees.”
Sydney, Austrailia @ Freelancer.com HQ
“On June 8th we held a meetup where 130 Sydney-based designers and Dribbble enthusiasts joined to share resources, designs and useful information. We heard from Allen Liao (Founder of Tzukuri, the un-loseable glasses) and had 1 minute skillshares, a chance for designers to get on stage and share something awesome with the group in 1 minute.
San José, Costa Rica @ Museum of Contemporary Art and Design
“Our second Meetup took place in an old national brewery warehouse, and it was a smashing success! Around 60 designers came to learn about Creative Confidence from the talks of 6 awesome creatives: Changos Inc (Nela & Noe), Hijos an amazing musician and designer, Neftalí Loría and Francine Delgado.
It was an amazing experience and we’re really happy to see that the Meetup is growing into a bigger event with each edition.”
Brooklyn @ Nooklyn HQ
“Our first Dribbble meetup was a blast and a half! We welcomed the Brooklyn dribbble community into our new digs and had a great night talking shop and designing beer labels. We also gave a presentation telling Nooklyn’s story and chatted about how design is one of our top values. All in all, we consider the meetup a success and can’t wait to welcome everyone back in the future.”
Paris, France @ Parisian Algolia Office
“We had three talks, the first one, by Sebastien Navizet about Branding as a Journey. The second one was an Introduction to Atomic-design by Nicolas Meuzard. The third one was by Francois Chay on how they empowered our teams to discover and tackle problems by themselves.
The attendees seemed pleased - by the talks, the beers and the pizzas! Even if it was during one of the hottest days of the year, people came and were amazing! Because of the heat, we gave away ice-cream (thanks Adam!) And they all left with a good dose of Dribbble & Algolia Swag!
It’s definitely an event that we will host with regularity in order to continue to build our relationships with the Dribbble community. thanks to Julie ( & Dribbble) for making it happen!”
Victoria, BC, Canada @ Metalab HQ
“A fantastic turn out last night at the first ever Victoria Dribbble Meetup. We had about 50 folks from the Victoria design community, including designers from Dribbble’s sister companies Pixel Union, Flow and MetaLab. Everyone had a great time talking shop over some brews and pizza! We’re already brainstorming for the next one, stay tuned!”
Milan, Italy @ Accenture Milan
“The event was a success. More that 120 people came and it was great! We really hope to collaborate again next year.”
Colorado, USA @ Galvanize
“The first state-wide Colorado Dribbble meetup was a huge success bringing together designers from Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, and beyond. Members gathered in downtown Denver to drink, mingle, snack and connect with many talented designers. In addition, we had the privilege of listening to Andy Stone of Emerson Stone share his experience of how the designer’s career path isn’t as linear as many designers may think.
