Who are you?
I’m Emmeline, a freelance illustrator living in North West England. I create picture books, graphic novels, book covers, editorial and advertising illustration! I love working with ink and digital illustration; and I focus my work on character, beautiful colour palettes and a strong sense of narrative.
What are you working on?
I’ve just finished a daily illustration project “What Emmeline Wore In July” where I illustrated my outfit for each day in October. I ran the project in Summer last year (What Emmeline Wore In July) so I wanted to bring it back with a bit of a new look (and some yummy Autumnal colours). The project ended with over 100,000 views, tens of thousands of likes and shares, and collaborations with the likes of Oasis, Fat Face and Joules! I’m always incredibly keen to challenge myself and push my work with daily projects, so it’s been amazing! The whole series can be found on my blog.
I’ve also just come back from a weekend at Thought Bubble Comic Festival, where I’d illustrated the festival image! It was amazing (and a bit surreal) to see my illustration all over the venue. The weekend has filled me with inspiration and plans, so I’m starting work on some brand new comics today!
Choose a favorite shot of yours. Why is it a favorite?
I think, although it’s quite simple, this is one of my favourite shots purely because of how raw and unpolished it is. I think a lot of the time you can feel pressure to only post your most perfectly finished work, but there’s so much value in seeing work in progress and behind-the-scenes snaps. This particular ink painting was just for fun, although it sparked some really interesting ideas for me and I’m hoping to integrate the character into a graphic novel I’m working on!
Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?
I usually use a combination of ink and digital illustration in my work. I’ll admit I follow my whim a bit in deciding which I prefer to use - I think sometimes with digital work you can feel a bit stuck sitting at your computer for hours on end, so for me it’s great to be able to grab a sketchbook and an ink brush pen and head out to work anywhere I fancy. For my ink brushwork I usually use a Pentel ink brush pen or a paintbrush, although I recently bought a Kuretake Sumi brush pen that I can’t wait to use. For my digital work I use Adobe Photoshop and a Wacom Bamboo tablet.

This illustration by Brian Edward Miller is just…gorgeous. I’ve been a fan of Brian’s work for a while now, and I’m constantly impressed with his beautiful landscapes and the really interesting process posts he writes about his work.
