Tarot, a deck of playing cards consisting of 78 cards of four suits (similar to playing cards), originated in the mid-15th century. They were originally used to play games in various parts of Europe but in the late 18th century tarot started to be used by mystics and occultists for divination—much like what we think of when we hear the word tarot today.
