NYC Dribbblers gather at the Headless Horseman next week to toast the arrival of fall. Check out the details at Nvite, then take a quick tour of the Big Apple with Compass Lead Designer Yaron Schoen.
What do you love about NYC?
Where do I start? NYC, to me, is still the cultural center of the world. At its core, NYC is an immigrant city, which turns it into a melting pot of culture. At any one point of the day you can attend any type of cultural event you could fathom. From design to art, music to theater, dance to food, NYC has it all, and does it all well. It’s hard to not be inspired by all the diversity in this city.
Where is Compass?
We’re located one block away from Union Square. It’s really nice because it’s located smack at the intersection of business, culture, and education (NYU and Parsons are close by). Plus there are some really great food joints (like Num Pang).
What is the NYC design scene like?
Which design scene? We have them all! No, seriously, we have them all. When it comes to graphic or interface design, I assume New York’s roots come from Madison Ave. and the advertising business. Many designers, including myself, don’t necessarily come from tech startups but rather from agencies. So it’s been very interesting see the design scene adapt to the new “product design” landscape.
Also, because NYC is such a large city there isn’t really one central design community, but there are rather dispersed pockets throughout the city. This makes finding new groups of designers super exciting. It’s not always the same faces, which can become a tad boring.
Choose three shots from three NYC designers you admire, and let us know why you chose the shots/designers.
Bagels on the internet by Kelli Anderson, above left.
I love Kelli Anderson’s work, but I love it even more when bagels are involved.
Long Mask by Daniel Savage, above center.
I’m a huge fan of line illustrations (is that what this style is called?), especially when the filling isn’t quite even. Really love the details of this shot by Something Savage (Daniel Savage)—so good.
Pacific Coast Highway by Caroline Hadilaksono, above right.
Ever since I had a kid, I’ve been really digging children books illustrations. This shot by Caroline Hadilaksono makes me think of my daughter, which makes me smile.
If you can’t meet Yaron in person on October 8, you can find him on Dribbble, at yaronschoen.com, and on Twitter.
