University of Pennsylvania Career Mapping

Media: Print, Static

Tools: Excel, Illustrator

Project Description: The University of Pennsylvania prides itself on being a highly competitive and pre-professional institution. Using the data from Career Services from the past six years, I mapped the career paths of students from the College of Arts and Sciences. It begins with the school, splits into the top 12 most popular majors, one of which, as seen above, is Communications. From there, percentages were calculated based on those who chose to pursue a professional career straight out of graduation versus those who chose to attend graduate school. The further granulation of decisions continues until the path ends with a salary bracket based on the path you have chosen.

This information visual aims to provide an overview of the most popular choices students make within their transformative, undergraduate careers. Percentages as well as the thickness of each line indicate the chance of each event on the map happening.

It is interesting to see where one starts and stops, how streamlined their liberal arts curriculum can be, and where certain decisions lead an individual financially. Further work on this project could be adapting it to a more robust, interactive platform, in order to incorporate all the possible choices for an individual student, rather than the most likely or most popular.
