Brand Designer

ORGANIZATION MISSION

The National Civil Rights Museum, located at the historic Lorraine Motel, honors, and preserves the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. We chronicle the American civil rights movement and tell the story of the ongoing struggle for human rights. We educate and serve as a catalyst to inspire action to create positive social change.

This position is in Memphis, TN in person.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

In support of the museum’s branding, creative design and content needs, the Brand Designer works closely with the Chief Marketing & External Affairs Officer to design, advertising, social and digital marketing campaigns, signage, and editorial and promotional content. The Brand Designer will help in maintaining the integrity, positioning, and messaging of the museum brand among diverse audiences and across multiple campaigns. Become part of the marketing team on a mission to move the National Civil Rights Museum’s (NCRM) branding forward. The National Civil Rights Museum is growing beyond its sole function as a museum and is looking for people who can grow, think, dream, and create. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The National Civil Rights Museum’s Brand Designer uses iconography, typography, color, space, art direction, storytelling, and strategy to define and create the visual elements that comprise NCRM’s brand identity. They elevate the brand experience through superior brand appearance of products, programs, events, communications, collateral materials, digital, and retail.

  • The Brand Designer visually communicates and creates graphics for Marketing and other departments including print/digital ads, social media graphics, e-blasts/e-News, posters, banners, brochures, signage, and others as needed.
  • Leads in design and applications for the brand website (on WordPress).
  • Communicates and presents design concepts to team/leader/director.
  • Creates presentation materials that effectively communicate design concepts.
  • Actively assists in articulating and documenting NCRM’s design ethos and processes. Gains knowledge of current trends in consumer experience and technology and other related design influencers.
  • Meets deadlines and communicates effectively with the team to bring design projects to life.
  • Executes projects well independently and as part of a team.
  • Designs solutions that creatively solve design and branding challenges.
  • Delight our audiences with designs that inspire, engage, and excite them.
  • Relies on user-centered design principles to produce high-quality visuals—from concept to execution—across many platforms.
  •  Collaborates with freelancers and third-party agencies.
  • Constantly refines the NCRM brand design language.
  • Crafts new ways to evolve the NCRM brand.
  • Able to create beautiful design work and out-of-the-box ideas.
  • Work on high-level brand concepts and day-to-day design solutions for marketing campaigns and other department projects and needs.
  • Participate in and conduct brainstorms for new project pitches.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in creative design and production.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other development and editing software.
  • Familiar with WordPress and Digital Marketing platforms.
  • Must have HTML/CSS understanding.
  • Copywriting, video editing, and photography skills are a plus.
  • Excellent web design experience.
  • Able to apply and perform design skills, including concepting, drawing/sketching, typography, ideation, color theory, texture, special design in scale, and visual presentation
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to current trends in color, design, fonts, art, and photography.  
  • Can present and explain the rationale for design decisions and thought processes.  
  • Understand and apply performance-based, user-centered design.
  • You’re able to design and lead the development of design systems
  • You understand research techniques and how they can be applied to problem-solving
  • Proficient use of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, XD and/or Sketch
  • Able to work in a rapidly changing, high-performing environment
  • Can lead multiple work priorities and demands.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license  


OTHER FUNCTIONS

The Brand Designer performs additional functions (essential or otherwise), which may be assigned. The position may require work on weekends, nights, and holidays to accommodate marketing program execution and coordination.
