W ~ Wangari Maathai

The first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree, Professor Wangari Maathai was a prominent Kenyan politician and environmentalist.

Wangari founded the Green Belt Movement - an organization focused on environmental conservation. Since the movement started in 1977, over 51 million trees have been planted and 30,000 women have been trained in forestry, food processing, bee-keeping, and other trades. In 2004, Wangari won the Nobel Prize for her “holistic approach to sustainable development that embraces democracy, human rights, and women’s rights in particular.”
