Biomimetics:
Multifunctional surfaces inspired from animals

Taking inspiration from nature to solve human problems is the idea behind "biomimicry," or "biomimetics." In the past years, the field of biomimicry has developed in science. This field strives to understand the creative solutions developed by animals and plants over millions of years of evolution, and apply them to our everyday lives. The application prospects of the biomimetic multifunctional surfaces are very broad, such as the civil field of self-cleaning textile fabrics, stable building structures copied from the backbone of turban shells to the space development field. This technology is also used in different sports, in the field of swimming for example, where fluid-drag reduction swimsuits are inspired by the structure of shark skin and contribute to the improvement of athlete performance.
