In Memory of Samantha Josephson πŸ™πŸΌ | Uber Safety

Tonight on the news, I saw a heart-breaking story about a beautiful young women, who's life was taken away; all because she got in the wrong car. This left me saddened and upset. So I turned to design to ease my emotions.

I believe design can be used to influence our world for the better, and mitigate the tragedies like this from happening again. So, I redesigned the Uber rider-pickup experience with a single goal: make safety the #1 priority when the Uber arrives.

The new UI consists of a massive "Safety Check" card, that is intentionally obtrusive, taking up over half the users screen. It gives riders an easy 3-step process to guide them to a safer journey home. Riders might be intoxicated when they order the ride, so I made the font and pictures are big. Finally there is a reminder to allow trusted contacts to get ride updates.

Although this cannot prevent all tragedies, I hope it could help mitigate them. If we continue to use design to solve problems like these, the world can be a safer place.

Rest easy Samantha ❀️
