Love Your Struggle

Being a designer causes you to reflect on and be critical of a lot of ways in which to improve one’s self. When it comes down to it, it’s our job to make mistakes so that we can find that one right way to progress, that diamond in the rough of the process of growing. Yet, often, our ego gets in the way. We’re so proud of what we’ve succeeded with in the past and what we’ve learned so far that we often forget to listen to what’s happening around us and how the very environment, which we are trying to be proud in, is telling us how we need to change. As I reflect on this process of improving as a designer, I can’t help but think of how it so easily relates to our nation. We have had and still do have potential to do so much with the independence our forefathers fought for. And maybe they fought for it for different reasons then, but now we have that independence and it’s our responsibility to do some good with it. There are many out there who seek to improve things, either by great steps or small ones. But there are also those who take the privilege of this independence for granted and exhibit too much pride in what people before them have accomplished. Pride gets you nowhere. Don’t be proud; be diligent. And if you are proud, enjoy it only for a moment, then drop it and keep moving. Many out there say “what can one person accomplish with just one small, humble act?” Well, maybe I don’t have the perfect answer for that, but I can speak to this: that’s how all of us designers, art directors, copywriters, and other artisans of every angle of creative nature progress at what we do. So reflect on your struggle, improve, and look forward to the next step, not back on what your proud of. Thank you for your patience in reading.
