Fun fact. English has two different words for tree and wood. Russian has one "дерево", Karelian — puu, Japanese — 木. But, it's not as simple in Japanese as it seems.

Japanese writing system has many different components, which are different in use. So they have Kanji — a huge set of logographic characters originally came from Chinese + similar hieroglyphs but originally created in Japan also known as Kokuji. These sets are used along with Kana, which contains two syllabaries — Katakana & Hiragana. And this is just the beginning. You'd better learn it yourself if interested. I found an awesome site about it.
