CHINESE SLANG CARDS - BÈI TĀI

备胎 - BÈI TĀI
Literally: spare tire
Colloquially: someone kept in the friend-zone as a “backup” dating partner
Being a “spare tire” means being friend-zoned or just being a side-piece with no upgrade potential: either way, not quite a “significant other”. The term can be applied to anyone, but straight men tend to fall into this predicament most frequently due to the skewed male-to-female ratio caused in part by the One- Child per Family policy of the last few decades.
