Sakai Portrait

Heather Sakai, founder of Sakeachi productions wanted a personal portrait that represented her Japanese family heritage, her inner warrior and her love of Hello Kitty.

I decided to create this poster design using influences from the classic art of Japanese calligraphy. Specifically, I wanted to use bold black lines with a strong sense of motion on a bright backdrop. The recurring pattern in the background and on the coffee cup is the Sakai family crest which she provided to me. This poster design represents two different illustration techniques for me. The dragon was hand drawn then vectorized in the computer. Most of her body and face were illustrated directly over photos we took of her.
