The Church, detail 1

The Church's new sound has been described as "sonic architecture" or “guitarchitecture” so I thought it would be interesting to build a church out of musical notes. I found myself inspired by Claude Monet's Reims cathedral paintings and I wanted to paint with musical notes —this mirrors CMYK printing techniques and halftones. The color palette is inspired by a combination of CMYK, Monet's paintings and the Australian Flag.

I modeled my cathedral of sound after Saint Mary's in Sydney, in The Church's home nation of Australia. The focal point is a rose window that is the head of a microphone, symbolizing the band's introduction into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Guitars, mics, drums make up much of the church's features. Stars can be seen rising above the church — a reference to The Church's accidental hit with the song "Under the Milky Way;" within this milky way the stars from the Australian flag can be seen. I have designed most of the letterforms seen on the poster — I was inspired by letters etched into the stones of local Cincinnati churches, with some Italianate details and flourishes.

Here is a process video I made of the print: https://vimeo.com/121774914
