Personal journey map

30 years of lines, boxes, colour and type

Personal project set as an internal piece of work to be completed in a few hours.

This took longer ...

Gathering my own data, I wanted to find out through the lens of 'expertise' whether I had in fact spent the 10,000 hours necessary, according to a 1993 paper written by Anders Ericson and popularised by Malcom Gladwell in 'Outliers'. I can guarantee I've spent that amount of times in meetings this week alone, although I'm pretty damn sure this doesn't make me an expert.

The premise was to break down each year by discipline - TOP SECTION - and then the total time in 5% buckets ... anything under 5% I didn't count, and I also didn't count (but documented) commuting, meetings or having to spell check everything I've ever published or put live.

Once the data was gathered I was amazed at where I have actually spent most of my time, and as you can see - BOTTOM SECTION - I totalled the hours up over the years to give a total breakdown.

And there you have it, 30 years.
