Online Museum Gallery - Website UI

The charity trust Culture Perth & Kinross sought out a fresh vision of curating an online, personalised museum aimed at students of the arts. They desired a sleek and easy UI that showcased small thumbnails of museum pieces with the ability to sort, organise and collect into an online gallery.

A user would log in to their My Museum account and begin curating their museum gallery by either searching for specific pieces or by browsing the CPK galleries. They could then click on the thumbnail of a piece, read the description and decide whether they would like to add the piece to their own collection.

One specific from the client was that they wanted the clickable thumbnails of the online gallery to be small and compact, giving a mosaic visual feel at first glance, as this would align with their brand identity. This posed a user experience challenge as there would be a large block of multiple visuals on the screen with no context, descriptions, or visual indicators of where the user should click. I suggested that there be options of image gallery viewing, with the mosaic concept appearing as the default. This would give the user multiple options to cater to their own experience, while still maintaining the visual identity of the website and the brand.
