Lake Sturgeon

I was honored to work on this wonderful piece in collaboration with a water professional I was paired up with! As a part of the Flow Project with UW-Madison, I learned more about my professional’s work, in this case, a study directed toward sturgeon! They are significant to Native people in the Great Lakes area, with the Menominee people being one they are culturally integral to. However, climate change (spoiler) has greatly impacted their populations. With various symbols of Native peoples and climate change, my hope is to show the connection of these fish to its roots, and highlight the impact of our current environment. It was super interesting learning more about specific ways that lake sturgeon could be affected (increasing temperatures, decreasing ice cover, and so much more). I also just had a lot of fun drawing a cool fish!!
