Daily UI 006 - User Profile

My First Social-style Profile

I've never designed for a social media-style profile before. Even though it feels like the easiest thing to go to for the prompt 'user profile', I wanted to challenge myself and to something I've not tried before. What's the point of this design challenge if I'm not chellnging myself, right?

I decided to ease myself in gently. I took some time to check out other designs on Dribbble and around the web, then got to work on a 5-minute wireframe. I didn't want to overthink it - something I have known myself to fall victim to - I just wanted to get pen to paper and get a design done. And here is the result!

Instagram-inspired

I'll be the first to admit it's not a groundbreaking design to revolutionise the social media market, but I think it's a solid entry to fit the prompt. I had in mind some kind of freelance photography app where you can hire the photographers - maybe some hybrid Instagram/Unsplash type app.

Light Mode/Dark Mode

I've noted in my past designs that I like options in the apps I use. I'm an avid dark mode user, so I had to design a dark version of this app. It was a very simple switch for this design as I've purposely used limited colours in order to allow the photographer's work shine (with a little bit of implied personalisation in the pink buttons to match the user's pink sweater).

I used this as an opportunity to practice my work with variables. I created light/dark mode colour variables and then used layer variable modes to be able to drag and drop to switch the colour scheme. I remember seeing this as a demo in the keynote when Figma first launched variables and have wanted to recreate it ever since.
