Film Flix

Introduction

Introducing a streaming service app that effortlessly enables profile switching and offers tailored interfaces for different age groups. In Dribbble's Product Design Course, I embarked on a captivating project armed with a comprehensive project brief and in-depth research. With the freedom to innovate, my mission was clear: to craft a solution that tackles users' pain points head-on.

Problem

In the realm of streaming services, a prevalent challenge has emerged surrounding the seamless transition for younger users from their parents' profiles to their own. Remarkably, even children as young as four are assigned to their profiles to access age-appropriate content. Regrettably, the current user experience necessitates an exasperating series of 10-12 mouse movements to uncover the concealed profile switch screen.

Parents get frustrated and unsubscribe from our streaming service. We will lose revenue from our inability to solve this small problem.

Research

With an extensive repertoire of user interviews and comprehensive user research, a compelling consensus has materialized: the younger user demographic, ranging from 4 to 8 years old, encounters a notable hindrance in locating the profile section within the application. This critical insight underscores the pressing need for an innovative solution that simplifies and streamlines the profile-switching process, catering specifically to the unique needs and abilities of these young users.

Solution

Our solution for the profile-switching challenge in our streaming service is designed to be simple and user-friendly. Users can seamlessly switch between profiles with just three actions, regardless of their location within the app. To boost user confidence, we have implemented a confirmation screen that visually confirms the successful profile switch, eliminating any confusion or uncertainty.

In addition, we recognize the importance of differentiating between the interfaces for adults and children. Our design solution incorporates visually distinct and age-appropriate interfaces for each user category. Through carefully selected color schemes, typography, and imagery, we have created personalized interfaces that cater to the unique preferences and sensibilities of both adult and young users.

Wireframes

The wireframe process played a pivotal role in our product design journey for the streaming service app. It served as a creative playground, allowing us to explore a multitude of design concepts and refine our ideas to perfection. Beginning with initial sketches, we gradually evolved towards more high-fidelity wireframes, providing a comprehensive understanding of the overall design landscape before progressing to the final visual stage.

Throughout the wireframing phase, my focus was on prioritizing key design elements that greatly enhance user experience. These elements encompassed effortless profile switching, a consistently visible menu positioned at the top of each page, clear and engaging thumbnails for each entertainment option, and the implementation of a confirmation screen when switching profiles. By meticulously attending to these details, we successfully streamlined the search process, ensuring that users extract the utmost value from their app experience, and ultimately fostering long-term engagement and satisfaction.

Visual Design

During the visual design stage, I executed a series of insightful in-person interviews to gauge the overall visual design with fresh perspectives. This testing process enabled me to identify specific areas requiring re-design and improvements, particularly in terms of page transitions. Notably, I discovered that implementing horizontal movie strips, as opposed to vertical ones, facilitated easier navigation within the application, aligning with users' accustomed interactions on other streaming platforms.

Furthermore, incorporating two entirely distinct designs for the entertainment strips, tailored separately for adults and children, proved highly beneficial. This approach provided a clear and unmistakable visual indication of the selected profile, contributing to a more intuitive and engaging user experience. By implementing these design decisions, I optimized usability and fostered a strong sense of differentiation between the profiles, enhancing the overall quality and appeal of our streaming service application.

Conclusion

In summary, the Film Flix project served as an invaluable learning experience in devising simple yet effective solutions, underscored by continuous user testing throughout each stage of the product design process. This case study emphasizes the significance of maintaining simplicity and leveraging in-person interviews to cultivate a robust and refined final product.

Throughout the journey, diligent efforts were made to introduce meaningful enhancements that significantly improved the user experience, particularly in streamlining the process of navigating and accessing desired shows. The task of creating distinct designs based on age groups presented a notable challenge, but the eventual resolution was both gratifying and impactful, forming a solid foundation for the overall project.

By incorporating user feedback and implementing necessary changes, I successfully created a simple yet powerful solution to address the users' challenges. This achievement exemplifies the value of user-centered design and reinforces the commitment to delivering a seamless and effective streaming service experience.
