Windows Into Heaven: Screen Printing Series

In my senior year of college, several years before I became an Orthodox Christian and became more intimately acquainted with the iconographic tradition, I challenged myself to create designs that imagined what a Protestant icon would look like. I personally researched missionaries, designed images, burned screens, and pulled prints which resulted in seven unique designs.

Original Artist Statement:

Using the visual language of iconography, I celebrate the image of God in the lives of seven Protestant Christians in a modern line-art style. These images are screen printed in gold. I have always admired how Orthodox brothers and sisters honor saints who have gone before them, and I believe Protestants could learn from this practice. I studied traditional icons and commonly used symbolism to create a similar visual language for each of the figures. These figures include Janani Luwum, May Hayman, Toyohiko Kagawa, Corrie Ten Boom, Martin Luther King Jr, Lottie Moon, and Romulo Sauñe. These saints modeled the image of God (eikon) in their lives and are worthy to be held in honor by other Christians. I hope to inspire respect for these faithful believers and promote a new visual and spiritual literacy through this body of work.
