CARGO

Stranded, one shipping crate

once functional, then forgotten.

small scraps seemingly useless

. . . unless

. . . maybe you’re a much smaller organism

seeking a stable landscape to take shelter

. . . or there’s a very large creature

looking for a piece of parchment

to hold place in a cozy mystery

. . . suppose space has become littered

with lost things, drifting debris a dubious

journey for all but a scrappy salvage ship

with nothing to lose

Stitching together salvaged parts, my work transforms ordinary objects. Layering plaster, paper mache, paper, and paint; This ritual is deeply intuitive, taking lead from the individual object what methods and media are used.

Presented as fragments found wandering imaginary worlds, this series Artifact poses new points of creative connection. As the first installation Cargo captures that unassuming moment when you stumble upon a new thought and your mind starts to wander a whole new landscape.

As the first installation in the series, Cargo is designed be approachable and unassuming. The central kinetic sculpture asks the viewer to adopt a fresh perspective. Hung from long black cord so the forms fall just below waist height, the viewer must physically adapt to the artifacts environment to take a closer look. The kinetic nature introduces chance, your view of the cargo is distinctly different than the person before and the person after. Empowering the individual perspective to discover something else that’s different and remarkable.
