The Fireflies of Georgia - educational poster

This project was a collaboration between myself and the Atlanta Firefly Project. To quote their website, the Atlanta Firefly Project is a “community initiative that assists researchers at the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia in studying firefly conservation in Georgia.” They manage an annual count in June and July, involving the participation of many citizens and organizations. I counted in the summer of 2021 in the Poncey Highland Community Garden / Freedom Park.

In the spring of 2022, founder Kelly and I worked on this poster for an audience of all ages, highlighting fireflies of note in Georgia, and describing how and where to spot them, based on habitat, time of day, and flight and flash pattern. It was fun to experience the back-and-forth between artistic sensibilities and scientific fact, and I think our final product reflects the best of both worlds.

Have you seen any fireflies yet this summer?
