Born in Denver Colorado, Sam Ward started skiing at the age of 18 months old. After competing in alpine racing for 5 years, Sam decided to switch to Freestyle skiing at the age of 13. Sam competed on the US freeskiing circuit for 5 seasons. After not being selected to the US freeskiing team for two years in a row, a proposition came to Sam to possibly compete for Team GB.

After much deliberation, at age 17, Sam decided to switch over to competing for Team GB to honor his family's heritage and represent the half of his family based in the UK.
