A Global Data Visualization of Literacy Rates by Gender

This large scale data visualization illustrates the differences in literacy rates between men and women globally. There are certain misconceptions (especially in developed nations) that a human right as basic as literacy is afforded to every individual regardless of gender, but that’s untrue.

Over 10% of adults around the world are illiterate, which amounts to about 774 million individuals who don't have a basis for rights to education. Two thirds of that number are women. Gender equality starts with literacy, but it's problematic when access to education is unequal.

This map uncovers these inequalities and presents them in a way that will hopefully inspire people to take action towards equality and help educate the future.
