The California Print

THE CALIFORNIA PRINT

The Hughes Studio surface pattern design business is based in sunny Los Angeles, California. Given our affection for the state, we thought that California would be a perfect fit for our State Symbols Vintage Print collection.

This collection currently includes the Texas State Print and the South Carolina State Print, with several new designs on the way. The goal of the State Symbols collection is to celebrate the history and diversity of all 50 states.

We wanted to explore different locations, with imagery outside of our signature toile de Jouy style. Before designing each print in the collection, we do a little state research, pulling up the list of official state symbols. We go through each list, picking out symbols that would translate well to surface pattern design.

For California, we chose to use the official state flower, the poppy; the official state bird, the California Quail; and the official state tree, the California Redwood. We created the print artwork by combining different vintage botanical style hand-drawn illustrated elements that represent our chosen motifs.

The California Print will be available to license via Patternbank. We have additional prints available to license on Patternbank and on Creative Market. Hughes Studio is also available for surface pattern design commissions. Please contact us if you are interested in learning more.
