La mano de Dios

2021

When his teammate Steve Hodge clears the ball into a high back-pass towards the goal, Peter Shilton is already on his way to grab it… that ball must be his. Peter is 185 centimeters tall, 20 more than the Argentian striker who is pouncing on that ball at the same moment. Peter is confident, he does not hesitate, and with his arm straight and his fist closed he has chosen the best trajectory to punch the ball away. But between him and that ball there is not only that number 10 striker... poor Peter, he does not know, he cannot know. Argentines tell us that there is none other than the God of football, who on that day and in that match has decided that Diego Armando Maradona would write an indelible page in the history of this wonderful sport. We know that Peter Shilton will never catch that ball… because with a gesture that the regulation does not allow, Maradona will take it away from him and to have it deposited in the back of the net he was defending. "La mano de D10s" will be called ... homage to that God of football who that evening decided to come and see one of his favorite children play.
