Four Generations

I made this collage today using family photos that my mom has found after my grandmother, Aracelis (Ana) passed this year in honor of her memory during Dia de los Muertos.

Although traditionally most of Puerto Rico doesn’t celebrate the holiday in the way Mexico does, it’s something that I feel a deep connection to and admire very much. I won’t be making a traditional ofrenda, but today I will be listening to Gloria Estefan’s Mi Tierra album which my grandma loved to dance to, I will be making arroz con guandules, and I’ll be thinking about the memories I have with her.

For those curious, the photograph on the top right from the left is my great-grandmother, Catalina, my mom, my grandmother, and me. I didn’t get to know my grandmother or great-grandmother very well, but I’m glad to have this photo of four generations of mothers & daughters. The bottom photo is from my grandma and Papa Jorge’s wedding in 1964.
