Say Their Names

Remember their names. I created this back in the beginning of June, and the following writing accompanied the picture on my instagram.
.
Breonna Taylor. She was 26. She was killed in the early morning by police serving a "no-knock warrant" to the incorrect house. She was shot at least 8 times. She died on March 13, 2020. Her killers are still not charged.
.
George Floyd. He was 46. He was killed by a police officer kneeling on his neck for almost 9 minutes because he was "resisting arrest" while three other officers watched and did nothing. For what? He was accused of using a counterfeit $20.00 bill. He died on May 25, 2020. At the time of creation, Derek Chauvin has had his charges upgraded to second-degree murder. Today, the three other officers have been charged as well.
.
Dion Johnson. A fellow Phoenician. He was 28. He was sleeping in his car on the Eastbound Loop of the 101. There was some sort of a "struggle", but there is no body-cam footage. No dash cam. He died on May 25, 2020. Police are still investigating.
.
I have spent the last few days absorbing. Listening. Learning. Donating where I can. Sharing. I still felt like I could do more. I still want to do more. But, I had an idea. I turned the pain and guilt of privilege and immense sadness I have been feeling and combined it with love and deep respect to create these images. I was inspired by Christian Iconography (mainly Byzantine art) and thought it would be a beautiful accompaniment to the memories of the lives lost tragically and too soon.
