I worked on this area of the main nav for a digital quarterly publication. Their audience was mainly academic/scholarly but in interviews they mentioned the desire for "whimsy" and I thought this would provide a fun moment for their users who mostly spend their time on the site reading long-form articles.

While page curls can be a bit overdone these days I felt it was appropriate considering that this client recently moved from print to digital-only subscriptions and this brought over a little touch of print, while also incorporating a whimsical interaction that they were looking for.
