Resurrection Day

Resurrection Day is here! In recent years I've been thinking more about the meaning of Easter and why eggs have been used as a major symbol of this holiday. At first, I was quick to push this in the corner of "another manmade object to cover up religious importance", but after doing a little bit of research I found the origin of all of this to be quite the opposite. An article on britannica.com describes that in some Eastern Orthodox and Western church traditions in the Middle Ages, eggs were banned from eating during Holy Week. During this time however, eggs were of course still being produced, so people would decorate these eggs (sometimes dying them red, representing Christ's blood) and use them as a symbol of Jesus' resurrection. Just as new life emerged from the empty tomb, so does new life emerge from the eggshell.
