Web Designer - Georgetown University's Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship

The Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS) integrates a teaching and learning center with the latest educational technology. Our team of experienced educators facilitates a broad-based program that promotes discovery, engagement, and diversity in an ever-expanding conception of learning.


The Web Designer collaborates with project leads, designers, and developers to help drive principles of clear, elegant, accessible, creative, and responsive web design across the organization. S/he will work hands-on as an individual contributor doing user visual design, experience (UX) research, and user interface (UI) design for the various web projects. By creating prototypes to quickly visualize, sketch, and communicate solutions to complex design problems, the Web dDsigner will play a crucial role in the iterative development of websites and media-rich applications. The incumbent may also contribute to print design on occasion. Because this position works with various colleagues across numerous projects, the ideal candidate is open to feedback and thrives in a collaborative environment.


Reporting to the Assistant Director for Special Projects and Strategic Integration at CNDLS, the Web Designer's duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Designs and builds web pages using a variety of graphics software applications, techniques, and tools.
  • Designs and develops user interface features, site animation, and special effects elements.
  • Participates in user research, creates user interface detailed design, and performs usability tests.
  • Contributes to the design group's efforts to enhance the appeal of the organization's online offerings.
  • Designs the website to support the organization's strategies and goals relative to external communications. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in interaction design, visual design or a related field.
  • Expert proficiency on the fundamentals of effective web design: typography, color, composition, rhythm, and form.
  • At least two years experience with interaction and visual design for web-based experiences and applications.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility.
  • Advanced knowledge of Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Basic working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience creating hi-fidelity visual concepts and interactive prototypes.
  • Experience with information architecture.
  • Experience designing and customizing WordPress themes.
  • Experience working on templates for frameworks like Django and Flask.
