Taste is an early-stage startup developing technology that empowers individuals to discover and embody their fullest, most authentic selves. We create tools to easily find the relationships, art, fashion, and other forms of self-expression that bring the most happiness and fulfillment. Our core innovation is an AI that learns your personal tastes by tapping into your intuitions, having you click on what you like, and then curating recommendations tailored to your unique desires.

Our first product is Rarebird, addressing the long-standing issues with dating apps.

Rarebird

Rarebird is a groundbreaking dating app that learns who you are and what you’re looking for, then finds the best matches for you. We move beyond endless swiping and popularity contests to focus on authentic connections based on individuality.

In Rarebird, you train your own personal AI by teaching it what you desire in an ideal match. Your AI then intelligently searches our network to curate the best potential matches tailored just for you. Rarebird’s design encourages showcasing your full self to attract others who appreciate you for who you really are, rather than relying on just images.

We’ve developed an initial version of the app (including the AI), and we are currently working towards our public beta release.

We aim to break out of the bland minimalism that’s pervasive today to instead have a tone/voice/message that’s optimistic, aspirational, and progressive without alienating anyone unnecessarily.

Roles

• Rarebird: Creative Director (Lead Designer)

  • Develop and evolve Rarebird’s visual identity, brand voice, and creative vision

  • Lead the redesign of the UI/UX and website, working with external contractors when needed

  • Ensure consistency across mediums (UI, website, copy, ads, etc)

  • Collaborate on product strategy and roadmap

  • Contribute to solving HCI design challenges, such as our AI training interface

  • Qualifications:

    • Background in design, marketing, or advertising

    • Experience with consumer apps preferred

Opportunity

You'd be joining a small, ambitious team at a crucial phase where you can help shape our product and company from the ground up. Compensation for this role will initially consist of substantial equity and a modest salary component. We're currently self-funded and are working part-time, but our intention is to raise external funding and go full-time as soon as possible.

We’re based in San Francisco and have a preference for local candidates for these critical roles.

Team

Taste was founded by Jey Kottalam and Brandon Perry after their own experiences with online dating led them to ask “How would a dating app work if it actually worked in the user’s favor?!”. This question combined with Jey’s prior research into preference learning algorithms to result in Rarebird’s innovative design.
