UX Designer

POSITION SUMMARY

The Simons Foundation is looking for a UX/UI Designer to join our Web Team. Reporting to the Director of Web Development, the UX Designer will collaborate with developers, product managers and web producers. This individual will help support, maintain, and design several sites associated with the Simons Foundation.

This is a full-time position based at the Simons Foundation’s New York City offices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to all aspects of the design process including research, experimentation, and revision.

  • Elicit constructive feedback and interpret that feedback into design solutions.

  • Initiate and perform field research, employ usability inspection methods, and perform usability testing to discover and implement important design details that people may not realize they need.

  • Assess the overall UX health of the various sites and create and execute plans to improve them.

  • Rapidly prototype emerging features and screens (wireframing, interactive prototypes, etc.).

  • Produce design systems and documentation for new and existing projects to both improve consistency within and across projects and to facilitate use by the development team.

  • Contribute to a set of UX-oriented style guidelines with which to direct our work.

  • Collaborate with others and work well with developers, product management, web producers, etc.

  • Stay relevant with the latest techniques, tools, and designs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Relevant undergraduate degree (human-computer interaction, design, psychology, information science, etc.), or equivalent work experience

Experience, Related Skills and Other Requirements

  • At least 3 years of web and user application design experience

  • UI and UX Design expertise with a focus on UX.

  • Ability to solve design challenges with creativity, efficiency, and precision.

  • Experience with all stages of a design process, including a firm grasp of interaction and usability design, and development concerns.

  • Skilled at designing responsive web sites and applications focused on user experience and accessibility.

  • Excellent communication, both written and spoken English, with colleagues of diverse backgrounds and work experience. Ability to explain why a design works or why it doesn’t.

  • Experience documenting design decisions and/ or creating design systems.

  • Strong interaction design skills: wireframing, prototyping (including quick low-fidelity prototypes and well-documented, component-based high fidelity designs).

  • Must be self-directed, confident, and able to work in a fast-paced environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience doing design work for news sites/in the journalism industry.

  • Experience developing design systems and documentation for existing projects with missing or incomplete documentation.

  • Strategies for building design systems on tight timelines for new projects.

  • Interest in science.

  • Experience with Figma.

  • Strong visual design skills: Latest trends, color and typography.

  • Experience integrating UX design with Agile software development.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • The full-time annual compensation range is $95,000 - $125,000 depending on experience.
