Graphic Designer

The graphic designer will support the art director, the senior graphic designer and photographer and University Marketing and Advancement Communications (UMAC) as a whole to create visual communication solutions. Adhering to the visual identity of the university, the graphic designer will find the most effective way to get messages across in print and digital media using a variety of methods such as color, type, illustration, photography, and various layout techniques.

The graphic designer will also work on presentation materials as well as fulfill a variety of design and illustration needs for university advancement. This position reports directly to the art director. Internal relationships include all units within the university advancement structure and units functioning within Strategic Initiatives, specifically the offices of University Web & Design and University Relations. External relationships include contact with vendors that specialize in the production of creative and multimedia projects.

• This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree with professional experience related to the position, or combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE: Candidate must have several years of professional experience (typically two to four years) or equivalent experience in graphic design or related field.

COMPETENCIES:

• Demonstrates a knowledge of contemporary design.

• Demonstrates an expertise in the creative use of type, illustration and photography as design elements.

• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (specifically InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom) 

• Experience and proficiency using PowerPoint and Microsoft Word.

• Experience coordinating and managing jobs with external print vendors. 

• Demonstrated high levels of creativity, discretion and independent judgment.

• Great degree of flexibility, efficiency and initiative in work style, especially under deadline constraints.

• Ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and diverse work environment.

• Ability to conceptualize and organize data for presentations.

• Strong interpersonal, communication and decision-making skills. 

• Strong ability to work within a team environment.

• Advanced degree in design, Professional certification is a plus.

• Experience working within email platforms such as Marketing Cloud and designing templates for email preferred.

• Experience working with not-for-profit or higher education institutions.

• Digital or hand-drawn illustration skills preferred.

• Basic knowledge of web design, and CSS/HTML is desired.
