while it is a sensitive subject, I don't think there's an issue with an illustration like this. How many TV networks will run video footage taken on 9/11? We all know what happened.
I appreciate that you don't shy away from exactly -what- happened to the towers (because it's important that our cultural memory of it does not fade), but the day was also much more than just the explosion. Perhaps, if your goal is to show the towers "in distress," a plume of smoke might be a bit more sensitive? The explosions themselves are also something very few of us saw "live" on television... I think a plume would be far more familiar and evocative for many.
