Hang Time LA: Speaker Spotlight on Paula Scher

Earlier this year Paula Scher was our guest on the Overtime podcast to talk about her early work at CBS Records, the joy of typographic expression, and creating opportunities for yourself. Now we’re thrilled to have her join us on the main stage at Hang Time Los Angeles on December 4th! You won’t want to miss it—purchase your ticket now.

For now, let’s hear why Paula is excited for Hang Time LA:

Tell us about your design background.

I went to Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and studied Illustration and Graphic Design. I moved to NYC in 1970 and went to work briefly designing the inside of children’s books. I then worked at CBS Records (1972-74) in the advertising department where I designed ads for records that appeared in trade magazines. In 1974 I was hired to design ads and record covers for Atlantic Records. I designed 25 album covers that year and then was hired back to CBS records in 1975 and became the East Coast Art Director in 1976. I was responsible for the design of 125 record covers a year and produced about 3 a week, though some were amendments to covers that were designed in the UK or Nashville. I left CBS in 1982 and, after a year at Time Inc. developing 2 magazines that were never produced, I joined with a fellow Tyler Alumnus Terry Koppel (he is a publication designer) and we founded the design firm, Koppel & Scher in 1984. It lasted until 1990. The partnership broke up in 1989 during the Gulf War recession. I carried on with the business and was then invited to join Pentagram. I spent a year closing up Koppel and Scher and joined Pentagram in 1991.

What are you working on right now?

My work is a combination of identity design and all forms of environmental graphics. I work for corporations and businesses, cultural institutions, and the government.

During Hang Time Los Angeles, we’ll be exploring the willingness to Try New Things. How do you incorporate trying new things into your workflow?

I look for them continually. They make my work exciting.
