Who are you? Let us know where you hail from and what you do.
I am from Omaha, Nebraska and am currently an Art Director at Webster, a local design firm, and I tackle work on my own at Sean Heisler Design. Having been in the field for some time now, I have experience in most areas related to graphic design but my niche, or my passion, lies within logo design, branding and illustration. I have been fortunate enough to work with very large companies, smaller companies and individuals around the world.
What are you working on?
Right now I am working on a rebrand for one of the country’s largest real estate property development firms. They are great people to work with and it is an awesome opportunity. I recently completed a number of departmental team logos for the San Francisco based software firm, Zendesk, which has been a lot of fun to work on and they are so great to work with as well. Also, very recently I was fortunate enough to have worked with the great folks at Turner Broadcasting where I designed the new logo for their cable channel, TBS.
Choose a favorite shot of yours. Why is it a favorite?
This is a little bit of an older shot of mine but it’s one of my favorite logos that I have designed. This was designed for a Guatemalan fair trade, natural foods distributor that honored local foods and traditions produced by small rural communities. From a construction standpoint it was one of my first forays into the monoline style and I like how it all came together. That said, conceptually it’s strong because it illustrates well the story behind Tatuana who was a Guatemalan woman who was arrested for suspicion of witchery and imprisoned. On the day of her trial guards came to her cell and were surprised to see that Tatuana was gone, and all that was left was a drawing of a boat on the wall of the cell. The tale goes that Tatuana drew the boat on the wall and then climbed into the boat where she sailed away to freedom. In the logo you can see the form of a woman hidden in the sails of the boat.
Tell us about your setup. What tools did you use to create the shot (e.g. hardware, software, pens, paper, blowtorch)?
No blowtorch used here although that’s what was likely going to happen to Tatuana had she been led to trial. :) Typically I start by sketching out ideas and often I will write down words or adjectives and such derived from the creative brief given to the client that help me in developing ideas, which is what I did in this case. However, sometimes ideas just come to me very quickly and I will jump right to the computer. I use a MacBook Pro with an external monitor and Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop for producing digital artwork.
Choose a favorite shot from another Player. Why do you dig it?
It’s so hard to pick a favorite out of so many greats shots from the talent at Dribbble. I have always loved this shot from Allan Peters. I’m a big fan of black and white, pure graphic artwork like this and I love how the bike seems to emerge from and is incorporated with the horizontal stripes. Brilliantly done.
