Designers tackling data visualizations must transform a body of information — often complex, often dynamic — into a graphic that users can quickly and easily interpret. Sounds difficult. Is difficult.
Sam Thibault, product design lead at Handsome, advises designers to begin with their audience. “When creating a data visualization it is best to take a user-centric approach,” he said. “A good design will play well off users’ perceptions in all cases to form a well-constructed story. This is especially important as many visualizations are dynamic in the content they show.
“Ask yourself what visual patterns will resonate with your users. How can those then be abstracted to create a visualization unique to your project?”
