Having a bit of an indecisive moment this morning trying to decide between these two options for error messages.

Definitely the second option for me, although I prefer the red in the top option as it seems a bit stronger? Either way, its an inviting form!

The second is OK. Maybe you can combine those two... The required field which is not filled could be filled with red (not only red border) and the text "This field is required" could be at right side in this field. The only thing I'm not sure about is that there may be too much of red :-D
The first option is the way I had styled the form originally, but something has been bugging the team about it. Having designed it myself, and it having been styled like that for the last couple of weeks, I sometimes find it hard to step back and look at the options objectively. But this is beginning to sound like a concensus - option 2 is worth developing/tweaking.
