This piece, which eventually became the Twitter ‘Fail Whale’ was originally called ‘Lifting a Dreamer’, and was a personal work – a visual greeting to my friends overseas.
It was then used during periods of downtime by the social networking service Twitter. When Twitter gets overloaded, users see the "Fail Whale" error message.
The art gives frustrated Twitterers something to smile about, also inspired creative artwork, illustrations and visual projects from the community.
