L1011 was one of 3 jumbo jets of the 70's. RollsRoyce delivered the engines very late, and the DC-10 ended up with more marketshare. As planes became more efficient and reliable, the need for 3 engines or more was reduced. Now 787's fly cross ocean flights on 2 super efficient engines.
