One thing I've often noticed with start-ups is that they often go for quantity over quality when it comes to the targeting.
There is no point in showing upgrade pop-ups to customers who are 99% unlikely to convert. Why target users who haven't seen the full value of your product yet?
Instead, select a highly focussed section of the audience and get them to work for you. Users who have had their 'aha' moments and understand exactly how your product can help their business.
In the long run, you're better for it!
