So we were going to use an event plugin but decided against it as it just isn't the easiest to use for someone that "just" wants basic event info etc so we decided on a custom post type.

This way we don't load a bunch of extra stuff via a plugin, it uses core features of wordpress and also we are able to tailor make the input boxes for what we know people want in a simple event page

Here you can see we bring in the google map, a link to it, address, event date, event times, cost, and share on google+, facebook, twitter and pinterest plus at the bottom if you look carefully we also have a volunteer form if users want. They can set a featured image or add a gallery etc

Things are really coming together...
