Santiago de Compostela is at the end of El Camino de Santiago or The Walk of St James, a pilgrimage made famous in the medieval times. The legend is that James a disciple of Jesus died here (martyred?) while evangelizing the people of Galicia. The shell is a symbol of "el camino". You can find shells on backpacks of pilgrims and on the posts that mark "el Camino".
