Al Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Bookmark Project

"Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here", which was started by Beau Beausoleil the same year, is a literary project commemorating the book-selling district, addressing issues of attacks on shared cultural spaces and censorship, and standing in solidarity with the Iraqi people and their cultural communities.

As an extension of the international coalition, the bookmark project was established in 2014.

For my bookmarks, I chose to focus on the beauty of words, no matter the language. My intent was for the message of peace to be clear. I chose the Hebrew word, שָׁלוֹם shalom, which means peace.

I also chose a quote from the Quran which spoke of peace, [2:12] کہا جاتا ہے کہ زمین میں فساد نہ کرو تو وہ کہتے ہیں ہم تو محض اصلاح کرنے والے ہیں۔, which means "And when it is said to them: ‘Create not disorder on the earth,’ they say: ‘We are only promoters of peace."
