The document icon took some inspiration from OS X's document icon.
The checkmark took some inspiration from Jesse's shot: http://dribbble.com/shots/28325-Check-Icon

I'm still unsure if the "3D" checkmark was a good idea for a toolbar icon, it makes it look weird and a bit blurry. I think it would probably look better from a straight-on perspective. I may even make the document icon a bit flatter as well (the page curl).

It definitely looks a bit blurry. I think it's the combination of the 3D effect and the transparency. I think if you lessened the 3D effect (making that bottom edge thinner) and made the bottom edge a bit darker it would help a lot. You could also add a subtle highlight (thin, lighter line) above the dark edge to sharpen it up a bit. The top edge also looks to me like it could just be sharper—assuming they're vector shapes I'd try shifting the points a bit (by sub-pixel increments) to try to make it sharper.

The curl looks sort of like a fold and sort of like a curl… I agree making it flatter probably makes the most sense!
